Miami, Mar 1.- René González, one of the five Cubans imprisoned in the United States and now under probation in that country, is still waiting for a court decision on his request for a temporary visit to Cuba, AFP reported. Gonzalez requested permission to a Miami court for a two-week visit to Cuba with the purpose of visiting his brother, who is in critical condition after struggling with cancer. "We filed the petition (in court) on Friday afternoon (...) and yet we have no answer from the government, who are the accusers in this case," Gonzalez´ attorney, Philip R. Horowitz told AFP. Rene Gonzalez was released under probation back in October 2011. After being released he requested permission to return to Cuba, which was denied by federal judge Joan Lenard. Gonzalez must remain in Florida territory for three years more. Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzales, known internationally as the “Cuban Five” were jailed in September 1998 for reporting on violent schemes by far-right anti-Cuban groups based in Miami. They were then convicted in 2001 by a Florida court on alleged espionage charges. The Five were given excessively long sentences, put in separate jails in different parts of the country with periods of solitary confinement, and routinely denied visits by their family members, who are residing in Cuba.
