Stephen Harper's speech for the "Tribute to Liberty" fundraiser reported by the Canadian Press on Friday became a vulgar ranting against "Nazism, Marxist-Leninism, today, terrorism — they all have one thing in common: the destruction, the end of human liberty.”
Let us calmly dissect the above one by one. Here we go: Nazism: The fascist Nazism came to power in Germany, Italy, Spain and... resulting from the fact that the bourgeois democracy could no longer hold on to power by parliamentary means, since the world capitalist system was mired in an economic crisis and Stephen Harper should know that, since he is Canada's Prime Minister. And of course fascism (read Nazism), was assisted to power by the counter-revolutionary Stalinist bureaucracy, which held sway in the German Communist Party's treacherous policies. Lo and behold, the final and the essential goal of fascism (read imperialism) without the bourgeoisie democratic means of government became the destruction of the Soviet Union. The heroic struggle of the working peoples in the Soviet Union kept the fascists at bay and, for that, millions upon millions gave their lives as a tribute to liberty, while different capitalist blocks sent tens of millions of working peoples to die for the plunder of the world resources and territories. Then ... Marxism-Leninism practiced by the Cuban revolution. A small island nation which has become the envy of anyone who cares about the destiny of humanity since it substantializes the concept of "Patria Es Humanidad" (Homeland Is Humanity). That is why a growing army of Cuban doctors, today reaching numbers of approximately 50,000 around the world in poor and developing countries (which is more than two times the World Health Organization's), are saving lives on a daily basis. The first student from Canada, Nabeel Yar Khan, is among tens of thousands who are studying medicine in Cuba thanks to the island providing this opportunity free of charge to the youth of humble people, which Harper likes to rap about very hypocritically. A nation that has been blockaded by the U.S. government with assistance from its allies, ever since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution; combined with the incessant U.S.-based terrorism unleashed against it, which has caused the death of 3478 people. One of these terrorist attacks was the bombing of a Cubana de Aviación airplane, the first explosion of a civilian airliner in this hemisphere. The mastermind of this abominable assault is walking the streets of Miami a free man and monuments are built and dedicated to his cohorts while Mr. Harper keeps quite about it. Furthermore Mr. Harper, who likes to lecture us about "terrorism" does not raise the unresolved issue of Fabio di Celmo with his friend, President Barack Hussein Obama. Fabio di Celmo was an Italian from Montreal with permanent residency in Canada, who was murdered, resulting from a bomb that was placed in a Havana hotel under the order of the CIA-trained and mercenary Luis Posada Carriles. Stop it, Mr. Harper! Stop patronizing us ... PLEASE! We will never lose our composure, we are patient and we have no aspirations of revenge in our hearts, nonetheless the victims of terrorism in Cuba continue imploring justice. And this is why we ask you once again ... “Which side are you on Honourable Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper?!” Are you on the side of justice and peace, or are you siding with violence and terrorism? It is inconsequential to analyze Mr. Harper’s praise of the late Ronald Regan, the late Margaret Thatcher and of Mr. Brian Mulroney. Why? Because the evidence of death, destruction, torture and forced disappearances in Latin America and in the Caribbean that resulted from the authority of such "leaders" is still there for everyone to see like an open wound. And, interestingly again, we see assassins like Luis Posada Carriles playing a role in perpetuating the flames of a brutal civil war in the 1980's, through the illicit and covert sale of weapons, etc., in order to finance his larger terrorist plans against Cuba and the region. Up to now, Guatemala is still reeling from the hundreds of thousands people that were disappeared by the military regimes sponsored by the U.S. government and by dictators such as Pinochet in Chile, a good friend of late Margaret Thatcher, while Mr. Mulroney's NAFTA has brought devastation for many farming families in the region to say the least. Hence the resulting flood of tens of thousands from these same affected communities into Canada which, in great numbers, would become cheap labour forces for the "free market economy". The predecessors of Mr. Harper did not fare any better in the previous decades either! Canada supplied Agent Orange and Agent Purple chemicals to the U.S. army, which was in the midst of conducting massive bombings against the heroic Vietnamese people who had just succeeded in expelling the French "democratic" colonizers and now found itself facing a myriad of atrocities at the hands of the stronger imperial power, which did not care about the flesh and blood of the hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese lives it was annihilating or about its destruction of that beautiful land and environment. And, of course, Canada could not stay away from its share of complicity in dividing the Korean nation into two separate countries. Of course, no one shall turn a blind eye to Mr. Harper's war mongering in Afghanistan; and the annihilation of human lives, along with the destruction of the environment in the countries of Iraq, Libya, Syria and Palestine, just to name a few. Anyone who possesses even the least desire for peace, love and liberty can easily recognize Mr. Harper’s double talk! Honourable Prime Minister Stephen Harper, rather than preaching to the youth (which you enjoy doing so much) without any regard for a sincere and honest discourse in reference to the root causes of the problems of humanity today in a decaying capitalist system, for once, if you have it in you, take a concrete step in fighting terrorism by demanding the unconditional and immediate release of the anti-terrorist Cuban Five also known as the "heroes of humanity”, as the former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark refers to them. And, even better, designate “fighting terrorism from U.S. territory” and “the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela to face justice”, as a part of the election platform of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Furthermore, the Prime Minister should open his eyes to the plight of the indigenous peoples of this land (who are more and more increasingly being referred to as "radical elements” and other such epithets) as they continue fighting to survive the destruction of their cultural heritage, their water, their environment and their ways of subsistence, not to mention addressing their repeated demand for justice for the missing, raped and murdered women, which has fallen on the authorities’ deaf ears! Lastly, Prime Minister Harper shall clear the air in Canada by discontinuing the mincing and mixing of words such as "extremism", “Muslim extremists", "radical and terrorist Muslims" and "backward", with his purpose of creating fear and paranoia in Canadian society to strengthen the division amongst peoples, thereby attempting to prevent unity in fighting for a world community that strives for justice, peace and true liberty. Alternatively, as true fighters for justice and freedom, we will not leave any stone unturned and we will continue to organize educational activities, conferences, rallies and street protests until we secure justice for all the prisoners of the imperial system, as our way of paying tribute to liberty. We organize for the liberty of the Cuban Five because they fought against the racist apartheid regime of South Africa ready to give up their lives for they are the inheritors of the tradition of great liberators such as Hatuey, Simón Bolívar, José Martí, Louis Riel, Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and because they epitomize the best values humanity has to offer. Therein lies Our Tribute to Liberty vs yours. Brotherly, Morteza Gorgzadeh Toronto Forum on Cuba [email protected] www.torontoforumoncuba.com PS As a tribute to liberty, we are organizing the following activities, which will be taking place in conjunction with activities of other friends in solidarity with the Cuban Five in front of the White House and across the world, marking the “3rd Annual 5 Days for the Cuban 5”
