Dear Sisters/Brothers,
The latest statement by the front-running mayoral candidate, John Tory, in equating those who oppose the criminal policies of the apartheid regime of Israel with anti-Semitism is another frontal attack on the freedom of association. His comments against granting funds to the Pride Parade because Queers Against Israeli Apartheid take part in it is nothing short of backing the murderous and genocidal practices of the Israeli regime against the people of Gaza in occupied Palestine of July and August. Some federal Conservative, Liberal and New Democratic Party politicians started such a discourse in the early 2000's while attending conferences in Europe, trying to find ways to quash any voice disagreeing with the politics of the regime of Israel. To understand this we recommend that any serious person read "ANTISEMITISM REAL AND IMAGINED: Responses to the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism" by Michael Keefer where he meticulously assembles the cricital responses made by some of the most reputable and prestigious Jewish voices in Canada as well as community-based voices and organizations. All the other mayoral candidates must make their positions clear on the crimes committed by the Israeli government against the people of Gaza! Why? Tens of thousands of Torontonians took part in many demonstrations for peace and against war culminating in the largest ever held Al-Quds Day in the city of Toronto on July 26th where more than 20,000 participated and chanted Stop the War on Gaza! Torontonians want a mayor who demands peace and justice in the face of genocide and terrorism carried out against the innocent Palestinians, and they will certainly vote with their hearts knowing that they are on the side of truth. The fight to free the anti-terrorist Cuban Five political prisoners in the U.S. is not unrelated, since the Cuban Five not only have expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people, in particular the people of Gaza, but have written poetry and drawn paintings in solidarity with the cause of Palestinians, while behind bars, like the artwork of Antonio Guerrero "Bridges Against Walls". The Zionist regime of Israel has always voted in line with the U.S. at the United Nations General Assembly, supporting the criminal, genocidal blockade imposed against Cuba. And we have seen the tentacles of this junior imperialist power in the Middle East supporting the violent, ultra rightist forces trying to create chaos in Venezuela and other nations sympathetic to the Bolivarian process underway in Latin America and the Caribbean. We invite you to attend our upcoming forum From Hatuey to Cuban Five: Cuba's Struggle for Independence which will take place at Beit Zatoun on Oct.10th (Cuba's Day of Independence) from 06:30pm. A newly released Animated Documentary on the case of the Cuban Five will be shown. You will be able to see an exhibition of the art of Nacho (Jose Cartagena), miniature art from Cuba and works by two of the Cuban Five, Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez. We will receive greetings from the Cuban Consulate and enjoy a presentation by Dr. Keith Ellis on the history of Cuba's struggle for independence to this date which continues with the heroic example of the Cuban Five; and their other compatriots in prison like Mumia Abu Jamal, Leonard Peltier, Oscar Lopez Rivera and thousands more. Toronto mayoral candidates must make clear which side are they on! On the side of justice and peace or for violence and terrorism. We in Toronto Forum on Cuba stand for peace and justice and that is why we condemn the genocidal practices of the Zionist apartheid regime of Israel and fight to the end for the freedom of the anti-terrorist Cuban Five political prisoners of the Empire. Please, join us with your presence and your voices as we celebrate the Int'l Day of Peace marching for Pachamama while distributing Fidel Castro's lecture on the Climate Change/Environment as early as 1992 in Rio de Janiro/Brazil. Take care and have a nice day. Brotherly, Morteza Gorgzadeh Toronto Forum on Cuba [email protected] http://www.torontoforumoncuba.com
